Achieving Goals Requires Clarity

May 1, 2025

Success isn’t something we stumble upon. It is built on a foundation that begins with setting a goal and making a plan to achieve it. It’s not as simple, however, as simply mapping out your targets. Chasing goals without clarity is fruitless. Before you can jump into what you want to do and how you’re going to get there, you need to be able to identify why these are the goals you’re going to strive for. You need to get crystal clear about what you want.

Clarity is your superpower – without it even the most brilliant ideas can get lost in reactivity and noise. It’s not optional. Clarity is the foundation of confident leadership, calm decision-making, and sustainable growth. It’s what helps give shape to your goals. It’s what facilitates achievable milestones and measures to track success. It’s what propels you forward.

Goals Without Purpose

There are lots of targets we can lay out before us. Sales targets. New markets to penetrate. Skills to master. Certificates and degrees to earn. New jobs and responsibilities. You can get specific, “We will close $1 million in new business this year.” Specific is good. It’s measurable. But it still isn’t enough.

Goals without purpose can lead to chaos and frustration. Simply setting the bar doesn’t mean you’ve set it in an achievable space or, more importantly, in a space that offers long-term benefits. Pushing toward goals, personal or organizational, that don’t align with your (or your organization’s) purpose, vision, and core values, can lead to burnout. It can drain morale. It can make you feel like you’re spinning your wheels and stretching your limits for nothing.

Goals With Clarity

Defining “why,” on the other hand, sets your sights on something meaningful and useful. It guides your decision-making processes. It gives you peace of mind, knowing you’re making informed choices that support what matters to you and your organization. It builds momentum and facilitates progression.

It’s not that the work required to achieve your goals gets easier. You’ll still need to roll up your sleeves and get busy, but working toward a goal with clarity is less stressful and overwhelming than pushing forward in chaos and uncertainty. Knowing why you’re working toward something can help motivate you to continue even when the road is rocky.

Getting Clear

Identifying your why requires some due diligence. This is more than just tagging some extra language on to the back of your goals. Understanding your why, as well as identifying what and how, takes some legwork.

  1. What do you value? Consider what is important to you. What motivates you? What are your core principles and values? What measures indicate success? This applies to both professional and personal growth.
  2. What do I excel at? What are your strengths and weaknesses? This isn’t to suggest you only focus on improving the areas you’re already strong in. It may mean setting your attention to areas where you wish to grow as they align with your goals and vision.
  3. What do others say? There is value in reaching out beyond our own line of sight. Spend time talking it over with your mentor, your trusted advisors, and your peers. Get their feedback on your initial thoughts and plans. Just hearing it out loud can help you more clearly evaluate those sentiments. Getting feedback is an added bonus.
  4. Write it down & review. Make it official. Put it on paper (or screen) and let it sit. Come back to it and read it with fresh eyes. How do you react now that you see it listed out before you? Does it resonate? Does it feel unnatural? Adjust as needed to craft a more clearly defined why, what, and how that feels like the right fit for you.
  5. Should vs. Want. As you evaluate your motivations and your goals, ask yourself the hard question – is this something I feel like I should do or is it something I want to do? Does this goal move me closer to where I want to be in 12 months? In 5 years? In 10 years? Does this align with my vision for myself or my business?
  6. Take action and re-evaluate. You’ve identified your motivation, your why. You’ve set your goals. You’ve mapped out how you plan to achieve those goals and what measures you’ll look to track progress. Now, test it out. Take those first steps toward the initial milestone. Reassess along the way. Now that you’re moving forward, does it feel aligned with your values and vision? Do you need to make adjustments to your plan? Starting this journey with clarity will give you a solid foundation as you move forward.
